Dean Kamen, the inventor who is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Segway, has filed a patent for an inflatable vertical-axis wind turbine, which could be rapidly transported to locations where it was needed.
The patent application for this seems to be less about renewable power generation and is focused more on the attached LEDs being used as an animated display system. While it might be usable as a rapidly deployable system for power generation after an emergency, other portable wind-power generators seem more promising to be able to generate enough power to be useful in the aftermath of a disaster. Nonetheless, it is always interesting to see new developments in wind power technology.

Really. The VA wind tubines don't work when they are made of composite, steel, or any other backyard junk. An inflatable one just sounds like a that... filled with hot air. Better off trying to snag some energy flying a kite in a lightining storm.

I do not have all the facts in front of me, but I have seen a couple charts showing a significant increase in power supplied by wind. My son helped during the installation of a large section in Texas last year. There to I witnessed Idle towers. When talking to the installers and company people I found that the infrastructure for handling capacity is a large issue in the big picture. They are monitored and will sit idle as others supply the amount the carrier can handle. There are a lot of factors that come into play.
Utmost, can we all agree we need to act now on limiting our need from oil, Not only from the climate aspect, especially when we have to purchase it from countries that wish to do us harm.
