It's an exciting time in wind energy these days. The U.S. will be getting its first offshore wind farm thanks to Cape Wind's long-awaited approval, and now plans for the first freshwater offshore wind farm in the U.S. have been announced as well. The Lake Erie Energy Development Corp has signed a deal with GE to purchase five offshore wind turbines destined for the Ohio waters of the lake.
The 4-MW turbines will be placed three to five miles offshore though their exact planned location isn't known. This is expected to be the first order of many from the development corp that has made a goal of having 1 GW of freshwater-based wind energy online by 2020.
That's not a very long time to install that much energy capacity and this first order only takes care of 20 MW. That means we'll be hearing a lot more about this project soon.

I think it is a very good idea to ban whaling in Lake Erie. I am surprised that the beasts manage to survive in the lake because of the high levels of pollution in the water.
We should consider if the installation of wind generators will cause them any harm. I suppose the blades will be high enough out of the water that they won't contact the animal in the event that it breeches underneath a wind mill.

And moving on to things that actually exist in Lake Erie... 
I'm excited. This is something I've wanted to see for a while. Lake Erie has decent winds, a very shallow bottom, and essentially no commercial activity that can be disrupted by wind farms.

It's good news for Canada too! A lot of the air pollution and acid rain in Ontario and Ohio is from coal-burning power plants in Ohio. Renewable energy is a win-win for all of us.

A small wind turbine can generate 52,000 kWh per year. Multiply that by 5 and it is pretty exciting. It doesn't sound much but the bigger thing here is the fact that they're realizing how using wind power can be very beneficial.

My guy just got a job installing land-based wind turbines on the Canadian side of Lake Erie - so happy that green tech is creating jobs! He's apprenticing on one of the first cranes manufactured specifically to put up wind turbines. Neat stuff.

The gulf-coast is experiencing a man-made disaster. The national news states the area affected by the oil-spill could fill Lake Erie six times over.
