LED Construction Signs Hacked.

{mosimage}

Honestly, I've considered doing this before, but placed it above my personal level of expertise. Someone, or a group of someone's in or around the University of Toronto has figured out how to hack the construction signs and canadian levitra 50mg is using them for environmental messages. Not only the ones shown here proclaiming “Don't Drive” and “Take Your SUV Back to Detroit” but also advertising a campus event on sustainability.

I'm impressed.  Rumor has it that a campus activist group, Cars Off Campus, is responsible. But I sure hope no one gets in trouble for that rumor.

Check out this Movie of the signs in action.

I don't care what you all think, but the anti-terrorism is very feasible. If the sign said that you have to stop ahead, and someone misses the stop, wrecks and kills someone, the people that change the sign are guilty of manslaughter. Same thing as stealing a roadsign.

Sorry but if you need a sign to tell you that traffic ahead of you is slowing down then you shouldn't be driving....

Second, these aren't necessarily construction signs. You'll find them located all over highways in Ontario, displaying everything from warnings about accidents/high winds to messages about not talking on your cell phone or tune to some radio station for traffic information.

Also, anyone saying that this is terrorism has serious issues and should seek counselling immediately.

Road signs save lives?
written by Guest, April 10, 2006
How about being a competent driver? I don't need a road sign to tell me that the cars in front of me have their break lights on. Common sense behind the wheel will save a lot more lives than babysitting our drivers on when to slow down. Whatever happen to evolution?

A+ on the sign changes.

construction signs
written by Guest, April 10, 2006
These types of signs, at least over here in Redmond/Seattle area, are used for everything from "expect delays" to "Go Seahawks". Generally if it's a real hazard, they either use a real sign (no an electric one) or they use the over-the-road led signs. I rarely (or never) see this type of led sign used for things that could endanger someone's life.

Sorry, but saying that a hacked roadsign is dangerous is a little ridiculous. The signs are there regardless, what difference does it make what the sign says (as long as it's not a warning of some sort). Honestly, if you're making the argument that a road sign is a danger, what about billboards?

Personally, i think it's a great movement. If people in SUV"s get mad cuz they get 8 mpg and see the sign, that might spur them to say jeeeez...wtf am i doing driving this thing. That's the other option to the guy who said he'd be more likely to drive the SUV (which makes NO SENSE).

Get it together.

\"Report Suspicious Behavior\"

Around the center of the universe (WashDC) there are many signs that span the beltway (8 lanes) that request drivers to "report suspicious behavior to 1-8000-eat-shit". Its amazing how you go through life with all these technologies advancing all the time, then you get smacked in the face realising just how many people cant look at a situation from more than one angle.

If a driver dies or kills someone because a road sign got changed to "dont drive", then they shouldnt have been on the road in the first place. The only road signs truely neccesary are permenant. Any other sign is not needed- any information given through a temporary sign is something you can realise using your eyes/brain or failing that, a radio.

Bikes only work in cities.
written by Guest, April 10, 2006
Bike-riding city dwellers - good for you.

But realise that if there was no gasoline tomorrow, you would starve to death within a week.

You're still reliant on intensive farming and massive transportation networks to bring food to you, via fuel-burning trains, trucks and vans. Such a transportation network is *necessary* to support cities.

The only "true" environmentalists in this country are those working on their own farm and we choice buy cialis without prescription growing their own food - which probably means they're Amish.

If terrorism's goal is obviously to cause terror in a population, explain to me how reading a sign that says "Don't Drive" would cause fear in someone. Maybe you should go back to calling them "commies".

Plus, a lot of those signs are left idle near construction, the ones warning of accidents or traffic are permanent and overhead. I hope they wouldn't change an active sign regardless.

Regardless of their message, these people did tamper with a system that affects the lives of many motorists.

They don't deserve ultra-severe "terrorism" penalties, but the penalty needs to be severe enough to deter other would-be vandals from attempting to gain unauthorized access to vital life safety systems of a city, which these signs are.

If I were a judge, well... on one hand, this is not something to lock people up for years and i use it buy cialis pills years over, on the other hand, you don't want people putting messages on these signs willy-nilly. My vote would be some jail and community service time, and deferred ddjudication, where this would not be a permanent entry on a criminal record.

You call them terrorists. By doing that, you demean every person who lost their life on 9/11. Terrorism is premeditated acts of TERROR designed to kill or injure. This is a harmless prank. The 'innocent' won't know that all the gawkers looking at the stalled car up ahead on the shoulder are slowing down traffic. I guess they'll have to resort to using their *GASP!* eyes!?! to see what's on the road ahead. Get a grip would ya? Technically, you're a melodramatist.

While it is easy to say "No harm, no foul", you really should plug your brain back in and look at the big picture.

The one responder had it right: Activisim should be smart, not cool.

Changing a road sign is dangerous (and plain stupid) stuff. All it takes is one person to think "Hey, let's change this sign" which results in an accident (or worse) for people's opinions to change.

I personally wouldn't want to be the person who gets hurt because of someone screwing around with road signs. You have to ask yourself: how would you feel if you were the innocent victim of an altered road sign?

Again, activism is good, but it has to be smart. Being 'cool' doesn't get the right message across.

Too cold to bike?
written by Guest, April 11, 2006
People, this is Toronto we're talking about. There is at most a foot of snow on the ground at any given time during the winter in southwestern Ontario. The streets are generally clear enough to ride on if there hasn't just been a substantial snowfall. I'm near Toronto (sadly) and I bike to work daily regardless of the weather or season. If anything, you can get too hot riding a bike in the winter because you're moving.

Granted, the TTC is crowded and overcharges compared to other municipalities. But the subway is relatively fast.

Knowing how the signs are used to display messages regarding what lanes are slow moving, I don't think there's any conceivable danger to commuters. If it weren't for the likely illegality of this 'hack', I would say that these students were being quite clever.

Its not like this is the first time... There are pictures from NYC Circo 2002 or so from the "All Your Base... " craze...

Also, for those of you that think its completely possible to live off a bike or public transportation, try living somewhere thats not one of the main metro areas like NYC, LA, ATL, or Chicago... "Public Transportation" hahah yeah right, obviously you have never been to places like Memphis, Huntsville, Etc.... some of these places have bus and or light rail but they systems are so crapy they are only useful in the inner city... personally I prefer to live in areas where I dont have to worry about a crack head mugging my kids for their lunch money, or "Hoes" working the curb in front of my residence... These areas in most of "The South" do not have that luxary of a NYC Subway, Short distances to the store (closest store to my place 2+ Miles), Short Bikeable Distance to the office (12 Miles 1 way to the office) etc...

No I am not for the SUVs... People that drive those should just hand me their ATM card... I could spend the money they waste on fuel and put it to a much better user (like getting drunk at the local strip club and going to ${SOME_STORE} to buy bad B SciFi Movies...)

Its not the average Joe Schmucatelli that lives in the burbs fault we waste too much energy (ok well maybe it is), but I blame it more on the "Oil/Vehicle" complex that has screwed t he public over at every corner to keep us dependant on oil when the technology exists to greatly increase fuel economy (think 50miles/gal out of a 2.2L Diesel), Hydrogen Cars which are easy to retrofit, Gas/Electric Hybrids (There are reasons Frieght Trains run this mode other then power...) not to mention *GASP* Nuclear power... Yes I said it Nuclear Power...

These aren't hacked construction signs. They're displays from a rented sign to promote the sustainability fair on campus.

This is clear because first the building in the back shows the location is the same as it was when I walked by it in daylights, and second the "bent" D in the first sign is the same default that was witnessed in the sign.

I cannot get the movie to work, but I think it would support my suspicions.

I don't want to be part of the back-and-forth of this, but personally, I only drive about once a month.

I live in the suburbs, in rainy, rainy, Oregon, and I walk or bike everywhere. I love it. Last year, I worked in a factory on the outskirts of town, and I biked forty-five minutes both ways every day. If there's any traffic at all, biking doesn't take me much longer than driving. And I arrive everywhere energized, instead of tired with my ass asleep.

I understand why people are reluctant to drive less, but it's really not as hard as it seems. We all have the time to wade through these ridiculous Internet conversations, we complain about being out of shape and not getting outside enough, and we complain about the bitch of paying for gas, insurance, and maintenance.

So if anyone else out there would like to give up driving but is intimidated, I just want to encourage you to do it. Give it a try, even just for a month, and I think you'll be very surprised.

written by Guest, April 14, 2006
I've seen a lot of those signs displaying lots of things, some of which could be very important, some of which could be considered trivial at best. Part of me wants to say that it really depends on what the sign said -- if it were a "Construction Workers Ahead, Slow Down" sign (fairly common in my area) then the hack would be endangering the lives of those workers. If it were a "Have a nice day" sign (I've seen those as well, sadly) I don't think I'd really care much. Someone probably would have paid for it one way or another (as in, a company or individual paying for the sign rental), which I guess means you could consider it, well, theft? But in the case that it were a safety sign, and someone were injured or killed because of the hack, well, that's just wrong. I believe that it would be manslaughter in that case. I don't think that this type of thing is right, and I know there's got to be a law against it, but I don't think that the group responsible should be locked away for years. I think that Community Service would be an ironic punishment... wink wink.

Kinda Dumb
written by Guest, April 15, 2006
Well, around here (Indiana, and most of the drive to the East Coast) these signs are frequently used for pertinant road safety information. They use the "workers ahead" signs because they DO help cut down on accidents; tell a dead contruction worker's family that its the stupid driver's fault they needed the sign.

On the other hand, I can rent one of these for a week from Mr. Superrent for one or two hundred bucks- and if I merely go look into renting one they'll show me how to program the damn thing; makes it all seem kinda pointless.

Finally, I'm pretty sure the U.S. and Canada are the only countries in the world with negative net air polution- why do we get all the hippies? :P

Now, if you want to do something impressive, go hack a digital billboard; its a hell of a lot harder to do, but you'd get a hell of a lot more attention, and noone might die because they didn't see the giant, flashing strip-club ad! :)

How many people on earth will die if we don't care about our life-supporting environment? Sure, manipulating sings can potentially kill some very bad drivers out there - but reducing oil consuption can save lives. This partial solutions to getting unpatriotic cowardly anti-American SUV drivers won't work. You need to go to war with them. This is not "terrorism" --nobody is killing anyone else just because they don't believe in allah or god or because they refer to god as "she". Conservatives who think that "oh, these eco-activists shouldn't break the law; they should only use legal persuasion to get people to cut back on consumption" reveal their true, cowardly, peace-at-any-cost colors. Patriotic Americans support the Simbionese Liberation Army. They give their support to animal rights soldiers. And they don't demoralize student soldiers fighting for a less crowded, less-SUV-filled world.

Same selfish conservatives then are all gung-ho with their "support the troops" shit, "even if you don't agree with the war". Well, WTF should I? It's MY legal right to give my support to WHOMEVER I WANT! I don't OWE some person just because they've got some cushy government job in the military. Unless you blow up the prison which might be used to prevent MY free speech, you do are NOT fighting for my rights, no matter how much your drill seargent brain washes you with his/her political crap.

If drivers depend on an led sign to tell them that there is construction ahead then they should also pay attemtion to the abundant orange cones/barrels and other signs saying "Left lane closed ahead" or "One lane road 500 feet" or something to that effect.

Who's it hurting?
written by CableMan, November 24, 2007
in Ontario they have strict rules for workers who are working anywhere near the travelled part of the road.

The signs are there to protect the motorist and the construction workers that placed them there.

Why do you think the ministry of transportation and seyonic.com the ministry of labour have come up with these rules?

EVERY rule they make is a result of someone either a motorist or a worker losing his life.

If you mess with a sign, it caused an accident and someone loses his life over it, why shouldn't that person be procecuted? They are a direct cause of the accident aren't they?

I'm sure the people responsible for this would take into account the gravity of the sign they were changing. If it said "slow immediately road narrows to one lane" they probably wouldn't have changed it. If it said something useless like "traveler info channel 1240", thats reasonable. Obviously those responsible for this are rather intelligent and would be able to forsee the consequences fo changing an important sign.
