We're seeing some more smart thinking from the EcoGeeks at Dell. It's not a revolutionary new technology or a fascinating PR initiative. They're just changing the way they ship servers.
By creating a system that allows for packaging of multiple products in the same box, Dell is halving the amount of cardboard used in shipping servers to clients. These kind of inefficiencies are everywhere. The customer is annoyed because there's so much trash, Dell has to buy more packaging, and more trees are turned into cardboard.
Most companies, when you purchase 100 blade servers, you'll get 100 boxes with 100 manuals and 100 CDs. Dell has sliced this number by developing boxes that can store up to ten blade servers.
It's just smart thinking, that's all, well done Dell.
