Oregon has really committed to wind power development. The 450-MW Biglow Canyon wind farm in northern Oregon has been completed and more large projects are in the works.
The $1 billion wind farm was built in three phases over the past two and a half years. It is comprised of 217 turbines and covers 25,000 acres in Sherman County. The energy produced by the wind farm will be able to power 125,000 homes.
The wind farm is owned by Portland General Electric, which is working to meet Oregon's renewable energy mandate of 15 percent by 2015 and 25 percent by 2025. The completion of this project, plus already existing wind farms, will get the utility to a 9 percent renewable energy load by the end of the year.
While Biglow Canyon is a large wind farm, Oregon has a much larger one in the works. The Shepard's Flat project, expected to be the largest in the U.S., will have a capacity of 845 MW and is due to be completed in 2012.
