The new 2013 Chevy Volt, which goes on sale in August, will have added miles to its electric range and greater efficiency overall. GM tinkered with the chemistry of the lithium-ion battery pack as well as its size and composition to get it to an EPA rating of 38 all-electric miles, up from 35 for last year's Volt, getting the car ever closer to its own target of 40 miles of electric range.

The additional range has led to a nice jump in the electric fuel rating to 98 mpg-e from 94 mpg-e. The gas engine will deliver 340 miles of range once the battery has been depleted.

Avoiding specifics, GM's director of Global Battery Systems Engineering Bill Wallace compared the battery to a cake batter, saying, "We’ve done some work at the cell level to modify the ‘ingredients’ to make a better end result."

The downside of this slightly extended range is that the battery will take a smidgen more time to charge. Using a 120-volt outlet, the battery will charge in 10.5 hours up from 10 and if using a 240-volt charger, drivers will be looking at 4.25 hours up from 4 even.

The good news is that even with upgrades the price of the Volt will remain the same at $39,995.

Whoopty DOOO!!I have a hybrid from another country the name I will not disclose, payed 21k and gets me 50-52 miles per gallon hway. I t has every gadget in the book and is one of the safest vehicles on the road. If GM was serious about their "auto", they would price it so they could sell it. Right now it is just a clunker in the show room.

Indeed, the price for this local made car is more expensive than imports...? I rather buy a Tesla if I pay about 40K... Chevy need to revise the pricing to be competitive, Toyota can get you a plug in for 10K less, common Chevy.

It's a great car for some

Note to Moe: Your unnamed import is great and excels at long distance fuel economy. The Volt excels as a commuter car. When used for shorter distances, the efficiency is spectactular. The gas engine let's me avoid needing a second car for occasional long distance trip. The Volt is expensive, but you get a lot for the price.

Chevy Lover: I kindly say that, although the Prius Plugin is 10K less, it offers less. The 11 mile range wouldn't let me commute gas-free like the Volt. The big disadvantage of the Volt is that the big T shaped battery limited it to a four seater.

The Volt is the ONLY PHEV car getting a practical all-electric range of about 40 miles. All I can say is, I just leased mine for a competitive $269/mo (got a few extras) and at 450 miles, I have only used 3 gallons of gas. Real testimonial folks. I'm saving $80 a week! And for the record, that's after calculating the difference between my gas costs less my electric expense to charge the vehicle. FYI....$0.96 cents to get 40 miles! Beat that!!!!!!

Yes, this car is available at car market and their demand is growing. I think this car’s new latest techniques are sporting for their well image. Main thing is volt or fuels rating with gas engine and I know people are definitely happy to using this car.

First of all, the car’s ultrasonic sensor system has a “blind spot” down column in front of the OBD port, which is why thieves to stay in the car outside, until they complete the cloning fob.

Volt is the winner!!!

Volt is the clear winner. Drove my brothers prius for a week and it was horrible. No power, motor sounds like it's going to explode, handling was abysmal, and god it's ugly. The Volt is by far the better automobile in fit, comfort, aesthetics, and economy. May cost a little more but you get what you pay for. Would never ever by a Prius.
