New Speed Record Set for Electric Airplanes

skyspark
Electric airplanes are still far behind their jet-fuel-guzzling counterparts, but progress is being made, like the new speed record set by an all-electric plane just a few days ago.   On its inaugural flight, the SkySpark reached a top speed of 250 km/hour.

The SkySpark is a Pioneer Alpi 300 plane that runs on a 75 kW electric motor and lithium polymer batteries.  The record-setting flight took off from the Turin Aeritalia airport in Italy during the World Air Games.

The team that built the SkySpark say that this speed record is just the beginning for their program.  They now want to focus on creating a hydrogen fuel cell powered-plane engine.

Click here for a video (in Italian) of the flight.
